a quest for spanish food

You should definitely it up La Tortilla Feliz -- I haven't been there since they re-opened but for non-Mexican Spanish food it is good stuff. It's in Tremont on 14th near the Lava Lounge. I did like Paladar out east in the Eton Collection, but it doesn't seem as authentic. I have been meaning to try El Rincon for a while. Thanks for the recommendation.
thank you! i thought it was pure mexican. very good to know--we will be trying it out soon.
Do you have a copy of Cleveland Ethnic Eats? Mine is woefully old (2004), but it lists a Dominican restaurant, El Manantial, at 2998 W. 25th (at Clark - I think I might have seen this place ....) and El Taino (Puerto Rican) at 3038 Scranton in Tremont.

I second La Tortilla Feliz...I've never been there but I've heard it's good and I've also heard enough stories of people walking in there and being surprised that it's not Mexican, a la Luchita's.

They might have some Puerto Rican fare at the Villa y Zapata on West 25th, too - although it's technically a Mexican restaurant, I think the family that runs this location is Puerto Rican. I never get anything there other than enchiladas, so I've never really looked at the rest of the menu....
we were at villa y zapata, the madison ave location, not long ago. it was purely mexican i believe, and very good and cheap.
thanks for reminding me about the cleveland ethnic eats book. i've been meaning to buy a copy.i googled el manantial and found this so maybe it is still open. frank would rejoice. still gotta try el taino, though from the outside, rincon looks nicer.
this is far from from the topic of spanish food, but yesterday i saw a somalian restaurant on rocky river dr. that i've passed a million times but never noticed till yesterday. wonder what that's like! (maybe similar to ethiopian).

Hey Jackie :)

I didn't realize your fiance is half Puerto Rican! We have that in common, b/c Jose is also a half breed (although, his other half is Irish. . .making him one of the whitest Latinos ever, haha).

So, we have been brainstorming on good recommendations for you guys and thought you might enjoy this Dominican restaurant on 4616 Clark Ave (right across the street from the local Nazi headquarters no less!) called Quisquella La Villa. They don't have a website, but they can be reached at: (216) 651-3410.

Let us know if you have the opportunity to check it out*

ps - We definitely second El Taino!

kelly & jose,

awesome, thankyou so much!

nazi headquarters-what ?! details.

In Downtown Lorain there is a place called El Kefon. It's right next to Flinger's Market. 100% Puerto Rican food. Mostly Take Out, but they do have a small dining area. This is the place to go when I want good food like my abuela used to make but I don't feel like cooking it. Absolutely amazing food. Not 100% sure about the hours. But he's usually sold out by the time that 6 pm rolls around.

P.S. I miss Lozada's on 25th Street. *sniff sniff* They had the best accapurra's de yucca.
I love food! Authentic Spanish food is not always easy to find since it is influenced by a lot of different cultures, and geographic regions. So there is a lot to swallow ;) Here is a single web page about the history of Spanish food.

The site teaches about the most common things native Spanish speakers talk about. At least you'll get the reason why Spanish food is so varied.
